Serving the Tarahumara People
What Does It Mean to Go “From Houston to the Ends of the Earth? “
When we pray over the locations where we take our team, we look for three specific things:
1. Peace from God that it is the right location. 2. A clear, much-needed “need” we can help fill. 3. Someone local who can follow up on the seeds planted.
This year, that led us back to the Tarahumara people, deep in the mountains of Chihuahua, Mexico. They live in one of the most isolated and challenging environments in the world.
For them, life revolves around “subsistence farming.” They don’t necessarily have jobs in the traditional sense but farm to feed their families. This usually provides just enough to survive on beans and potatoes. Occasionally, they sell the extra, but it’s often not much. Their remote location in the rugged mountains also means very limited access to modern healthcare and resources, leaving them vulnerable to many challenges.
From January 3rd to 13th, our team of 60 dedicated individuals embarked on an unforgettable mission trip to bring essential medical and dental care to this incredible community. But more importantly, we brought the hope of the Gospel. Beyond addressing physical needs, our mission aimed to share the love and truth of Jesus Christ, offering spiritual healing and the message of hope.
We ran full medical and dental clinics and distributed both prescription and reading glasses. Additional services included haircuts, physiotherapy, ultrasounds, and X-rays.
For the Kidz!
One thing you know about us is that we’re big on “For The Kidz!” We hosted daily children’s events that reached over 400 kids. Every child received an Operation Christmas Child gift box! These events, filled with games, crafts, and the Gospel message, brought joy and hope to children who often have limited opportunities for education and entertainment.
A Miracle in the Snow
On the seventh day, we were hit by a surprise snowstorm that forced us to adjust our plans. The snow and ice made roads impassable, so we hiked from house to house, bringing gifts, donations, and invitations for villagers to come to our base camp clinic. Many walked through the snow to receive care.
One of the most special moments of that day was the miraculous story of Pedro. When our team visited his home, his mother shared that she had felt in her spirit someone would visit them. She thought it might be a friend, but to her surprise, it was us.
During the visit, Danny noticed Pedro was limping. When asked about it, Pedro explained he had been unable to walk properly for a year due to persistent pain. After we prayed for him, something incredible happened—God healed him! At first, Pedro couldn’t believe it. He started jumping up and down, stomping his feet, and checking if the pain was still there. To his amazement, it was completely gone. His joy was contagious, and it was a moment we’ll never forget.
Special Ultrasound Moments
The ultrasounds we provided became one of the most touching aspects of our outreach. For many new mothers, seeing their baby’s heartbeat for the first time brought an overwhelming sense of joy and hope. One mother’s face lit up with excitement as she witnessed the tiny heartbeat—a special reminder of the beauty of new life.
Beyond the joy of healthy pregnancies, the ultrasounds also revealed critical health concerns. Some patients learned they had tumors or cysts, giving them an opportunity to seek essential follow-up care they might not have otherwise pursued. In two cases, our medical team was even able to perform three minor surgeries on-site, thanks to the diagnostic of the ultrasound.
These moments underscored just how transformative access to basic medical services can be—offering not just physical healing but hope for a healthier future.
The Heart of the Mission: Sharing the Gospel
While providing medical care was essential, our core mission was to share the love and hope of Jesus Christ. Throughout the week, we held prayer meetings and shared the Gospel message with everyone we met.
One exciting outcome was the formation of two new Bible studies/home churches in the Tarahumara communities. This is a direct result of our outreach and a beautiful reminder that God’s work doesn’t end with one trip. These efforts have the potential to bear fruit for years to come.
Gratitude and Safe Return
The mission trip was a success, and I am beyond grateful for the incredible team who worked tirelessly to make it happen. Every day was filled with hard work, joy, laughter, and deep connections with the people we served.
Our team arrived back home safely, and we’re now reflecting on the experiences and impact we had. It’s humbling to see how God is moving in this part of the world, and we’re excited to see the ongoing fruit from this mission.
As we wrap up this chapter, we’re already looking ahead. Please join us in praying for the new Bible studies that have started, continued support for the Tarahumara communities, and future opportunities to share the Gospel.
